THE WINE ADVOCATE

The 1999 Barolo Cerequio is clearly their finest of the 1999 vintage, the most powerful and expansive in aroma, the sweetest and ripest both on the nose and the palate, and the most complex as well, with chocolate and caramel supplementing the black cherry fruit, the licorice, and the road tar.

Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018. Since the 1996 vintage Chiarlo has been making a Barolo Riserva from selected lots aged solely in cask, a wine obviously intended to represent his interpretation of “tradition” though the casks are new and the approach, in this sense, is also “modern”.

The 1997 Barolo Riserva Triumviratum, light but vivid garnet, is very fragrant, with expressive balsamic and floral notes, and a subtle contribution from the untoasted wood. The palate, ample, round, and quite soft, with melting tannins and a satiny mouthfeel, is very forward and approachable, typically of many 1997s., though the attractive density suggests that the wine will go forward for a while as well.

Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. Chiarlo’s major Barbera property is half of a very large estate which he divided with Piero Antinori . It is an exceptional spot in Agliano d’Asti, something which is easily perceptible in the 2000 Barbera d’Asti La Court.

Deep ruby and with very ripe plum and berry fruit and an important spiciness from the oak, it is lush, sweet, very smooth and caressing on the palate, but deep and with an important volume and length as well. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2010.

Importer: Kobrand Corp., New York, NY; tel (212) 490-9300.
