Barolo Cannubi 2006 - 93/100
The 2006 Barolo Cannubi flows with layers of intense, super-ripe dark cherries and plums. This is a surprisingly rich, weighty style from the Cannubi vineyard. While I admire the concentration of the fruit, much of that seems to have been achieved at the expense of site-specific expression, which is a shame.
Barbaresco Asili 2007 - 93/100
The 2007 Barbaresco Asili flows with terrific purity in its dark red fruit. This rich, enveloping Asili impresses for its density and balance, both of which are first rate. This is a relatively muscular Barbaresco from Asili that stands apart from the more feminine wines that tend to emerge from this site.
Barolo Cerequio - 92/100
The 2006 Barolo Cerequio is a powerful, deep wine loaded with plums, black cherries, minerals, violets and spices. This, too, is a virile, powerful Barolo from one of the region's top sites. The Cerequio boasts superior concentration and a long, intense finish.
Barolo Tortoniano - 91/100
The 2006 Barolo Tortoniano is a beautiful wine with gorgeous depth and intensity in its dark red fruit, spice, flowers and licorice. The Tortoniano deftly balances richness and concentration with what is essentially a fairly medium-bodied style.
Barbaresco Reyna - 91/100
The 2007 Barbaresco Reyna is a beautiful entry-level Barbaresco with lovely density in its ripe, red fruit and a long, polished finish. Berries, spices, French oak and tar add complexity as the Reyna sits in the glass, but this is ultimately a forward, juicy Barbaresco to enjoy while the fruit remains vibrant.
Barbera La Court 2007 - 90/100
The 2007 Barbera d-Asti Superiore La Court flows from the glass with an attractive warmth to its spiced dark red fruit. This is a wonderfully open, expressive Barbera from Chiarlo that impresses for its elegance and polish rather than for its heft.
Gavi le Marne - 88/100
Michele Chiarlo's 2009 Gavi Le Marne is a classy, elegant white laced with peaches, flowers and spices. The medium-bodied Le Marne reveals good balance, even if it falls a touch short on the finish
Barbera d'Asti le Orme - 88/100
The 2008 Barbera d'Asti Superiore Le Orme offers up dark red fruit, flowers, licorice and spices, showing good depth and fine overall harmony. Clean, mineral notes frame the pretty finish.
